NEDRA gets awarded funding for regular water testing!
Our River Eden has high levels of pollution from nitrates and phosphates that are harmful to wildlife.
In September, our biodiversity champions and a small group of volunteers took part in the Great UK Water Blitz. Using water testing kits along the River Eden they discovered the bad news, and it spurred the need for regular water testing. They applied to Kent County Council for funding. Thanks to the support of County Councillor, Margot McArthur, funding has been granted to pay for the equipment necessary to carry out regular water testing.
Water samples from seven strategic locations around Edenbridge will be collected monthly. Testing primarily for phosphates, nitrates, and ammonia as they are key indicators of river health. In time, tests for microbiological testing for E. coli will also be included. The team will analyse the results to determine the sources of the pollution and continue their engagement with third parties like South East Rivers Trust and Southern Water to restore and maintain the health of our river.
NEDRA will notify residents of significant results.
This is just the start of the NEDRA river Eden health programme. The funding should provide sufficient testing for one year, so NEDRA will look for further funding in due course.
With persistence and good data our aim is to restore the rivers ecosystem to benefit local biodiversity and ensure a cleaner, healthier river for people, dogs and our wildlife to enjoy. A sure sign of success will be the return of more kingfishers, dragonflies, and damselflies along our riverbanks.
Last month our biodiversity champions also joined the River Action’s March for Clean Water in London. Nearly 15000 people gathered to remind the Government that they need to act and stop the pollution of Britain’s waterways.
